Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom (1993, Arcade)

Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom is a video game for arcade machines from the depths of 1993. And, perhaps, this is the best work that was created for these savage, greedy constructs to money. That, whatever ironically, makes the game much more successful in the delay of cash in the thirsty to plunge into the fabulous adventure of children of the nineties of the nineties.

And in order to most correctly bring to the reader the appropriateness of such a loud statement, I will start with the main advantages of the game – with its artistic prying. Tower of Doom is not another bright, but empty fantasy of that era (and the current one too), which relies exclusively in shape and in many ways recognizable then the images. No, before us, one might say, is a modern video game in the genre of heroic fantasy, where there are classes, gold and experience, ammunition and artifacts, narrative and plot elections. Of course, this is not the first video game that disperses such attributes of the genre, now unchanged – it is important here how it does it.

A pleasant misconception will think that all of the above things in Tower of Doom are fully represented and functional – this is not so. By killing monsters, the player receives experience points, which are then converted to a new character level, but whether this circumstance makes any qualitative change to the gameplay? Absolutely not. The game solemnly announces that the hero has reached personal growth and received +2 health points, while I do not even have the opportunity to weigh, it is a lot or little – I can’t imagine how much health in numerical expression I initially had. However, by the end of the game, the indicator has grown somewhere on one fifth. But this is hardly a satisfactory progress that should bring an increase in the level.

Or another example – in the game there is an element of the study of the location with the ability to look for chests in which artifacts are located. Among other things, I met speed boots and a protection ring +2. But there is no inventory in the game, and I do not feel at all that my hero has become somehow stronger or faster. Do these items do something useful, or serve only with curtsy to D&D? I don’t know. But I know that traps preceding some of such chests are fraught with a very real danger, but only no rogue, alas, will not neutralize them.

The plot of Tower of Doom https://bettingsitesnogamstop.co.uk/baseball/ for the scale of Baldurs Gate 3 also does not claim. I, honestly, could not keep track of him-somewhere the weak knowledge of the foreign language did not allow him, and somewhere the screens with the text replace each other at an inadequate speed, as if my heroes go to protect their native land at the speed reader of all Faerun. Yes, and not to say that the work was distinguished by a whole narrative, with that inherent in this form, exposition, climax and final.

In general, it looks like the next standardized detachment of an elf, man, gnome and someone else embarked on a path of wanderings, saved a couple of villages, killed a dragon, after which he found his own Nemesis-an ominous shadow elf, which he wears a cuirass and does not wear pants, and the lord who serves as an even more frightening personality. Having defeated him, our detachment in the person of one covers me with glory, and the adventure receives a decent result, at which the game successfully ends.

And what can be attractive in the told? – A disappointed listener will ask me. Ordinary arcade with mediocre realization of interesting ideas. And so it would be, if not for His Majesty – the narrative of the game. If you disassemble Tower of Doom on the fingers, like some kind of mathematical equation, then yes, this is a typical model of your time, stupid superficial adventure, but it is worth starting it as you immediately find yourself at the table among the heroes, and the voiced voice throws you "WelCome to the D & D World!", calling on the road, in the new world, unknown, marvelous, in need of us. One has only a young hero to take a step to meet his fate, how he already hears a scream for help and the stubs in a hurry to accept this challenge.

And even now, with all the ingenuousness of such a concept, something charming, magical is in a look in it. All this catchy DND superstructure in the form, albeit imaginary, the growth of the character, all the new booty, the change of environment and victory over monsters – not just like that, but at the request of the townspeople, that they will be happy to sell you the necessary ammunition – all this forms a holistic impression, significantly more than the sum of its parts. This is what the Tower of Doom distinguishes from the typical arcade of those years-not thoughtless cutting of enemies up to the final, but participation in a mission that has a cause, epic mood and glorious feat in the end, in the world rich in details, which has some kind of, but reliability, events in which it seems reasonable, and decisions are important.

If you formulate everything said capacious, Tower of doom is the case when the kids from the arcade pavilion collide around your gaming session, not to see how many points you can dial, but to find out what will happen next to the game – what else the heroes are faced with, what else the game will surprise. Because Tower of Doom is a big fantasy adventure-how much it can be on the Arcade Machine of the 1990s.

However, the proposed Tower of Doom is an enthusiastic sense of involvement with the magical universe of D&D and half would not be so strong and drunk, if the process of confrontation of a fairy -tale evil itself was not such. Yes, the game is more likely to portray what the D&D mechanic actually adheres to, but this is still a damn good bitemap. In Tower of Doom, you are invited not thoughtlessly to burn the attack button, but also actively evade enemy fire, avoiding and maneuvering on the battlefield, simultaneously using magic and improvised means.

Unlike some Golden Ax, the player does not turn out to be permaced between two or more subjects-you almost always have the necessary freedom to control the course of the battle. What is immensely helped by the same consumables acquired from merchants – a well -abandoned blade is able to interrupt the special attack of the boss, otherwise it would only have to dodge. How many modern games in which this is possible, you know? This is despite the fact that the player’s arsenal also has features of application – for example, oil bombs are good against undead, but they do not work in the swamp, because the fly is not crashed on the ground, but drowns in a quagmire.

There is no full -fledged class of a wizard in Tower of Doom, however, for example, an elf, in addition to consumables, has a number of attacking spells, the list of which is replenished as it is very good in battles against the bosses, although the girl itself is inferior to company in the amount of health and owning a sword, which makes the game for it is even more complicated than for a simple -minded warrior. The bizarry of an elven woman also lies in the fact that the number of applications in her spells is limited, but the counter is replenished with death and gaining a new life at a quarter price. You can even say that the frequent death of the elven is one of the conditions for the game for this character

Well, yes, Tower of doom is still a product for arcade machines, and therefore you will have to pay more and more to follow. The last boss, a powerful lich, which will bring down a meteorite rain on our head, is guaranteed to leave you without pocket money for the next week. But you will go to this, due to all the previously given advantages of the game – because this is your adventure, you have already seen so much, did so much and are eager to complete what has begun to the end.

Like all arcades, Tower of Doom is very short-you can go somewhere in an hour and a half. This time is just enough for the game to prove himself from the best side, to conceal from the attention of the player the controversial role of artifacts and the imaginary importance of the plot for developing. Except, perhaps, the main thing – in the pursuit of the gold of the player himself the final boss will squeeze all the juices out of it, and this battle is unlikely to go through the category of "honest". But today, when all this huge iron box from the past era fits on a PC or smartphone, the issue of money before the young hero is no longer worth it, and there is no reason to abandon the large epic adventure proposed by such a small video game.
